My health journey began when I was diagnosed with lupus, experiencing extreme fatigue and seeking ways to boost my energy levels. At the time, my diet was far from ideal, consisting mainly of high-processed foods with limited fruits and vegetables.
Over the past four years, I've experimented with various supplements and foods to support my metabolism. Here are my top five dietary staples for increasing energy and metabolism:
-
Coconut Oil: Rich in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), coconut oil is a healthy source of fats that the body efficiently burns for energy. Opt for raw, organic, extra virgin coconut oil for maximum benefits. I personally enjoy adding it to my organic coffee three to four times a week.
-
Water: Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health and maintaining optimal metabolism. I prioritize drinking alkaline, coconut, and spring water, aiming for 2 to 3 liters daily to support hydration and metabolic function.
-
Fish: Certain types of fish, such as salmon and sardines, are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce stress hormones and inflammation. Lowering inflammation contributes to increased energy levels. I make sure to include a can of sardines in my lunchbox regularly.
-
Leafy Greens: Dark leafy greens like spinach are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Since fiber isn't fully digested by the body, consuming leafy greens can boost metabolism by requiring more energy for digestion, resulting in increased vitality. I incorporate spinach into my daily smoothies and aim for 4 to 5 servings of vegetables each day.
-
Cacao: Cacao, the purest form of chocolate, is loaded with antioxidants and rich in vitamins and minerals. I like to add cacao to my trail mix and granola for a nutritious and energizing boost.
By incorporating these dietary staples into my routine, I've been able to support my metabolism and overall health on my journey with lupus.
